According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km (2.4 mi). 6.1 km (2.4 mi) of it is land and 0.1 km (0.04 mi) of it (0.84%) is water. Hines takes it name from Edward Hines, a Chicago area lumber company that originally owned the now shutdown sawmill.

There were 689 housing units at an average density of 112.2/km (290.7/mi).
